Life in the area of Birjand is older than can be imagined. The oldest finds are footprints of very large prehistoric animals found in the north of Birjand. Canadian scholars have dated these to 50 milion years ago. These footprints are the best-preserved set of footprints found to date anywhere in the world. Also in this site the earliest footprints of various birds have been found.
